Chain, Bracelet & Necklace Measurement Guide
Precision matters. Proper measurement ensures comfort, longevity, and a flawless custom fit.

1. Understanding Chain Length
Chain Length is measured from one end of the chain to the other, including the clasp and end ring.
This applies to:
-
Ready-to-Wear necklaces
-
Ready-to-Wear bracelets
-
Custom permanent jewelry chains prior to welding
Standard Reference Lengths
Bracelets
-
6.5" – Petite wrist
-
7" – Standard wrist (most common)
-
7.5"–8" – Larger wrist
Necklaces
-
14" – Choker
-
16" – Collarbone (most common)
-
18" – Slight drop below collarbone
-
20"+ – Layering or statement length
For permanent jewelry, final sizing is adjusted on the body before welding.
2. Understanding Chain Width
Chain Width is measured at the widest point of each individual link.
Width affects:
-
Visual weight
-
Durability
-
Price point
-
Overall aesthetic (delicate vs bold)
Quick Reference:
-
1.0–1.5mm → Fine / minimal
-
2.0–3.0mm → Everyday statement
-
3.5mm+ → Bold / structured
Always measure width across the widest outer edges of the link — not the interior opening.
3. Bracelet Fitting (Permanent Jewelry)
When fitting for welding:
-
Wrap chain comfortably around the wrist.
-
Allow slight movement — it should not indent skin.
-
Customer should be able to:
-
Slide one finger lightly underneath
-
Rotate the bracelet slightly
-
Too tight = discomfort + tension stress
Too loose = excessive wear + higher break risk
Golden Rule: Comfort first. Security second. Aesthetic third.

4. Necklace Fitting Guidelines
When fitting necklaces:
-
Consider collarbone placement.
-
Account for pendant or charm drop (adds visual length).
-
Check how the chain layers with existing pieces.
Ask:
-
Do you want it to sit higher or lower?
-
Will you be layering this?
-
Do you want it to peek out or sit under clothing?
A 1” difference dramatically changes visual impact.
5. Metal & Structure Awareness
Different metals respond differently:
-
Solid Gold → Durable, heirloom quality
-
Gold Fill → Strong, but avoid over-tension
-
Sterling Silver → Softer; allow appropriate movement
Delicate chains require slightly more movement allowance than thicker styles.
6. Visual Balance Matters
Measurement is not just numeric — it’s visual.
A 7” bracelet in a 3.5mm Figaro reads differently than a 7” 1.2mm cable chain.
Always step back and:
-
Look at proportion on the wrist or neckline
-
Assess scale against body frame
-
Consider the client’s lifestyle
Final Reminder for Fitting
✔ Measure twice
✔ Confirm comfort
✔ Consider proportion
✔ Explain length and width clearly to the client
Precision builds trust.
Education builds authority.
Fit builds longevity.
